CorelDRAW X6 Solves Runaway List of Color Styles

A couple of years ago I told you to Delete Extra Stuff to Speed Up CorelDRAW. While the advice is pretty simple, the actual process could be time consuming. Today I want to focus specifically on color styles.

Last week I visit a client site to try and find solutions for some of the issues they were having with CorelDRAW. Maybe some of these symptoms sound familiar to you. Their files seemed to be larger than necessary. Using copy/paste was very slow. Some files were very slow to open and others may not open at all. I asked to see one of the files causing the most problems and was shocked at just how infested it was with color styles. Even if you never use this feature, your files could be loaded with color styles. The file I looked at had tens of thousands of them. I held down the delete key for five minutes straight and it didn't even make a dent in the list. Go ahead and look at some of the files causing you problems. Open up the Color Styles Docker (Window | Dockers | Color Styles) and double click on the folder for the file you just opened. If the file is good, there will be no color styles listed. Unfortunately you may find quite a few of them and until SP3 of CorelDRAW X5, there wasn't an easy way to get rid of them.

What's the solution? Open the file in CorelDRAW X6 and the color styles will all be deleted! I did that with the client's problem file and saved it back to CorelDRAW X4 format (the version they are currently using). The original file took a couple of minutes to open. After deleting the color styles, it took less than 20 seconds (it was a pretty complex file). There was also a large difference in the file size and copy/paste was quite speedy.

So if you have some of the symptoms I described at the beginning of this post, you really need to look into upgrading to CorelDRAW X6. Obviously Corel knew this was an issue for users and addressed it. They not only solved this issue, but totally overhauled styles. This means additional functionality and the problem of excess styles should now be gone forever. For those who don't want to upgrade, download the trial version of CorelDRAW X6 and cleanse your files before the trial period ends.

Foster,

This is amazing. Yesterday, for the first time, I experienced the slowdown you describe (I'm using X4 at work, X6 at home).

Sure enough, the file had hundreds of color styles. So did one other recently edited file. The older files had no color styles.

I had experimented with color styles a few days ago, and left the docker active. So now I believe that having the color styles docker active automatically creates color styles when a file is edited.

So until I can upgrade at work, I will make sure the docker is gone!

Thanks once again, Foster . . .

Pepperink, glad it was so timely for you and that you could get it resolved before it got out of control.
