CorelDRAW X6.1 Update - Proceed With Extreme Caution

As I write this, I've been working with the CorelDRAW X6.1 update for a couple of hours and I am finding it nearly unusable! Unless you have an urgent need to install it, I can't recommend this update to anyone.

One of the changes that Corel promised was that the Align and Distribute dialog box would be moved to a Docker. For me, there is no longer an Align and Distribute button on the Property Bar, there is no Align and Distribute command in the Align and Distribute flyout, there is no Align and Distribute in the Dockers flyout and none of them appear anywhere in customization. In short, there is no way to distribute objects after installing the update.

I'm also finding text gets mangled badly. Look at the screen shot below. The white text on a black background is what shows on screen. Just below that you can see how the same text looks in the Edit Text dialog box. It is completely different, not even the same letters though the font looks the same.

When editing Text on a Path, I find it is even worse. First is the text as seen before the edit cursor is inserted.

When I put the text cursor in the text to make a change, the text gets completely garbled. Trying to edit the text in the Edit Text dialog box is even worse.

Keep in mind that the bugs I've shown here are only after a short period of usage. I'm fearful that there will be many more that I've yet to discover. It should also be noted that I wasn't trying to find bugs. I was simply trying to get a project finished and they just happened.

One of the other changes is that all users will be moved to a "membership" level and as part of that change, you need to agree to a new EULA (End User License Agreement). I was in a hurry to install the update and didn't read every word as I'm sure many of you do with these agreements. I have been told that there is some text in there that may not be agreeable to everyone. I know I will need to fully uninstall and re-install anyways and will make sure to read it in detail when I attempt another install.

I hope these issues are just weird anomalies on my system. Since I've tested many versions of CorelDRAW over the years, I think they are common problems that could affect most users. For that reason, I do not suggest you install the update. As I get more time to explore these problems and more information, I'll make sure to pass that information along to you.

Thanks for the warning, Foster! I just downloaded the update but now I will better wait to install it!

Foster, you seem to experience problems that nobody has experienced internally part of our testing process. Did you have a chance to test this on a clean installation of X6 (with no macros / add-ons and a standard wordkspace, e.g. F8)? I really want to figure out what is going on with your system. I for example have no problem to see the Align & Distribute docker and customize it into a toolbar for example.

I wanted to clarify something regarding the license agreement. The End User License Agreement (EULA) with X6.1 is identical to the one with X6 (that is the one you have to agree in order to be able to install the application / the update). The latest version of the EULA is available at http://www.corel.com/eula and within the product from Help > About, e.g. no need to re-install the application.

Because the new memberships include online services, we are adding a new "Terms of Service" that will cover, as its name implies, the services includes with the membership and subscription options going forward. They are separate from the EULA as these are not mandatory (only if you sign-up for a membership). You can get access to the latest version of the TOS at http://www.corel.com/tos. Finally, we will handle your data (login, ...) as per the terms of our privacy policy available at http://www.corel.com/privacy.

Gerard,

It is unrealistic to expect users to not customize workspaces and install custom add-ons and macros. Why would Corel include the ability to customize if they were going to blame that customization for an update failing to install correctly? Yes I have custom add-ons installed and one of those add-ons also caused issues with the updates for CorelDRAW X5 working correctly. That issue was resolved so that later updates didn't have problems. Clearly the error was re-introduced and that isn't acceptable.

There were also bugs introduced which I documented. Given that I had a nearly flawless experience with the original release, introduction of such bugs is also not acceptable.

I'll cover the EULA and terms of service in a future post. When users understand what it says, I doubt any of them will be happy. It seems like the lawyers went way overboard.

Foster, can you tell us what macros/add-ons impacted X5, and may be affecting X6? I use a lot of macros, and will be very cautious in updating. I'm actually still using X3 for the majority of my production work.
Thanks!
Jill

Jill, EZ Metrics modifies the workspace. Corel was aware of these and SP3 for CorelDRAW X5 had no problems with it. It seems to be the cause the workspace not being updated in CorelDRAW X6.1, but certainly is not the cause of the other bugs discussed.

Actually I too have experienced what Foster is experiencing. I will uninstall and reinstall the software in the hopes things will go back to the way they were.

Here's what I did to have the Align/Distribute dock work. I went into customization>commands & pulled the Align/Distribute command item onto the desktop. Once there I clicked it and the dock appeared. I then closed the command item and the dock stayed. Hope this helps...

Now fix the text issues please.

I am having the same issue with the text. Really an upgrade that is supposed to be better....lol. What needs to be done is the software designers need to work in the real world for a day...that's all it would take. I found a number of issues with the first job I did.

Text - NO issues with my upgrade, it all works fine. note that i am using the 64 bit version...

Foster, I created the same text on a path that you did and do not experience the same problem as you. I can edit the text as always.

v6 on a 64bit system was flakey - it crashed when nudging with the keyboard arrows. So far, this update has solved a very unstable product, so kudos!

Foster,

I wish I had read your comments before I update. I have a terrible workspace issues since the update. Is there any way to remove just the update or do I have to unistalled CorelX6 and reinstall.

Unfortunately you do have to completely uninstall CorelDRAW X6 and start over. Make sure you check the "uninstall user files" as that will also uninstall your workspace. Don't worry, it doesn't delete any drawings you've created.

I have a similar text problem with certain Asian TT fonts. They do not display on the page & they can be seen only when the letters are highlighted either on the page or in the edit text box. Deleting the font from the font folder and re-installing it, as advised by Corel, made no difference.

Any new news on these update issues? Is there an X6.1.something coming? Are you working with Corel on your issues Foster?

Thanks,

Dennis

Dennis, there is no news since this post was written. While Corel may indeed fix these bugs in the X6.2 release (they claim it is due later this year), they have shown no indication to fix the Terms of Service introduced with this release. For many users, the new TOS is the real dealbreaker.

Press F8 and leave it pressed. Run CorelDraw. It will ask you if you want to reset the workspace to the default one. Press yes. That's all you have to do.

Gilad, that would not work in this situation.

Is good to see that I'm not the only one with X6 problems as the Corel's experts says. I wonder what kind of computers they use to test X6? With X3 I had no problems importing EPS's, PDF's, AI's, etc... but now I have to manipulate all with AI before import to Corel. I have pretty old but nice clip arts, with X5 I had no problems with the thumbnails of these files but now X6 can't preview them, I'm working blind with them. They're going backwards instead of improving Corel. Forgive my english, I'm from Costa Rica.

Diego.
